I have to admit, I was relatively underwhelmed by this book. I feel like there were two stories trying to be told here: the story of three friends as they move from childhood to adulthood together in an alternate universe that has some starkly different practices than our own. Then there is the story of the alternate universe itself. I feel like neither story was done well. The story of the three friends remained shallow, and the story of the alternate universe was significantly underdeveloped. I feel like there was so much more potential for a deeper and richer narrative.
