The depiction of the hyena goring the other creatures literally made me feel ill. And I think that counts as good writing?

This entire book is an allegory to the question of religion: does God exist?

The author, or rather, Pi, presents how in the case where there's no evidence to prove two possible stories, is it not more hopeful and positive to belief in the one with less morbid and gruesome details, given that it does not change the way we experience existence in the first place?

In the case that we are not interested in pursuing the truth, or when the truth does not matter, yes, his view is valid and I agree. But in the case of discussing existence, I feel like knowing the nature of the universe is important for our understanding of physics and philosophy itself, to solve actual, worldly problems. It is not just a matter of the soul, because the soul is not mutually exclusive from human experience, and consequently the studies of philosophy, the physical sciences etc. Empirical data means a lot, and to present this narrative of potentially muddling the truth is rather contentious in my opinion.

Nevertheless, the adventure Pi goes on is riveting, chock full of metaphors, allegories and hidden meanings that can only be uncovered upon closer analysis, or a second read.

Read for my intro to literature class. There was some very beautiful bits of writing at times but the overall boredom and confusion I felt outweigh all of that for me personally. The animal death throughout made me feel really disgusting, which means it works quite well, but not sure why you would want to read all that.

I just read a masterpiece. What an incredible introspective story! I took of half a star only because when I first picked this up the beginning is so long and bat sh*t crazy that I was like “what is going on why are we talking about this” for at least the first 40%.

Life of Pi is one of those books that you can envision an entire unit in an English class being focused on. The amount of complex symbolism and significance that is portrayed in a book I just assumed would be about a boy surviving on a boat with a tiger is astronomical. Yes, life of Pi is about survival, but it is also about the complex surrealism of storytelling, religious exploration/symbolism, adaptability, the challenges of life, the duality of nature and so so many more. You could take an entire college course only going into the nitty gritty details and symbols of this story and you still wouldn’t be able to wrap your head around all the complexities of this story.

Yes, the beginning was slow and I was honestly almost tempted to quit because it took 40-50% of the book to really get into the deep stuff, but the exposition is 100% necessary to get to know Pi before the ship sinking and to get your brain pondering Pi’s dilemmas/thought processes.

Overall I do not care what anyone says this book is a masterpiece and to anyone who can’t see that they need to come back and read this in 5 years when they’ve become wiser and are ready to let their imagination run during this story.

HUGE TWs for animal suffering, animal death, human suffering, and human death.
