Naser’s life seems bleak in the hot summer in Jeddah. Not a Saudi citizen life seems bleak with friends left town for cooler climes and the religious police prowl the streets. He writes to his mother in Africa and hoping to meet a women but this eludes him in a country that separates them with walls and veils. This book is slow to start but as it moves along it picks up and the authors beautiful prose as Naser and fiore find love through at first writing letters to each other to how through determination they find each other. “And life, I know, is beautiful” sums this novel up as it shows what humans will endure to find love. I liked that the author also included a glossary at the back to help understand certain words in this shrouded world.
