Fun book for adults and children alike. I’m always looking for books for my classroom and this is one that will definitely be put on the list. The author does a great job of describing small details to the point where I could almost smell the sweet scent of oranges. My daughter who is 11 and is not a big reader was captivated by the story and appreciated its fast pace. It’s creepy, but not too creepy where it will give you nightmares

Definitely loved experiencing Caribbean folklore, but in the end it wasn't super memorable. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to any kid, though.

This was fantastic and fantastical! I've never heard of jumbies before, that I can recall. But I'm ready to start the next book already!

Inspired by Haitian folklore and written by Trinidadian Baptiste, this has a lush sense of place and an interesting cast of characters. Elements of familiar folktales blend with those from a different tradition, to make a creepy and unusual novel. See my full review here.

Very much the type of children's book that can't really hold my attention as an adult reader. There was nothing wrong with it, I just found myself getting bored halfway through. Nevertheless, it is a wonderfully diverse read for younger readers because it is rich in Caribbean folklore, including spooky creatures, a lush island setting, native (I assume) songs, and characters of color. I also liked the overall theme of living in balance with each other and the hard questions of whose land this really is.
