This was one of the most fun kids magical school/adventure books I have read in a while! I loved the historical context of Alexandria and alchemy and the main character Shad was so unique to this genre as an immigrant, sweets-loving, belly-desiring, kind-at-his-core kid.

I wanted to like this book much more than I did. I enjoyed the care and attention the author gives to Lebanese culture. It was how childish the character felt. It didn't feel like they were acting like children, but how an adult feels children think and act.

Fun story. Last 10-15% really fell apart though, like the author wrote out an outline and forgot to fill that part in / connect all the dots. But cute and enjoyable and I would read the next one definitely.

Kids will love this fantasy school! It's something not written often-alchemy-but has elements of other popular fantasy series that will keep kids reading-unlikely villains/friends, surprise plot twists, and fun magic. Loved this world!
