Some absolutely amazing characters. Thoroughly enjoyed the book.

A great way to really look at a battle... if you really stop and think abkut it. How much does War really change in the end and for what?

Thats all I can really say. That ans the stand alones continue to impress and in my opinion are better than the trilogy.

Very impressive Abercrombie..

Despite the unique concept of covering only a few days, it remains gripping. Some of best character moments in the series.
  •  “The truth is like salt. Men want to taste a little, but too much makes everyone sick.”
  •  “Armour …’ mused Whirrun, licking a finger and scrubbing some speck of dirt from the pommel of his sword, ‘is part of a state of mind … in which you admit the possibility … of being hit.”
  •  “So you love war. I used to think you were a decent man. But I see now I was mistaken. You're a hero.”

I love Abercrombie's works and writting style. This book was kind of a flop for me because I tend to skim through the battle portions and this one is pretty much all battle or waiting for it. I liked seeing Caulder's POV and getting a bit more of Shivers and Black Dow. I will definitely keep reading everything this man publishes.

4.5. Joe Abercrombie’s writing is so good and his ability to make you care about all the characters is unmatched. This book takes place at a battle over the course of 3 days and we learn about characters on both sides of the war. In typical Abercrombie fashion no one is “good” and no one is “bad”, plus we know that since both side of fighting we can assume not everyone will make it out alive. Plus he knows how to write battle scenes. This isn’t the kind of book I’d usually like, but I loved it.
