Two young girls who survive Chernobyl find their stories entwined in the lives of two friends who met during WWII. A beautiful tale of what family should and should not be. I think the WWII story was worth a book in itself and I wish that story had just been told by the grandmother instead of through the flashbacks because it always interrupted the main story just as it was hitting its stride. It was a pretty intense story.
Graphic: Child abuse and Racial slurs
