This is a reread for me and I enjoyed even more than the first time I read this story. Being able to compare thee characters from where they started to where they are is great. It's also awesome to see the development of the themes. It is a slower build in the beginning, but has enough hooks to keep you interested. The action scenes are well written and exciting. The character moments and dynamics are also great. Darrow, the MC, is exhilarating to follow.

The first half was okay but not worth near the hype this book recieved. With a barley valed anology for the british empire and a pretty bad caste system it just wasn't enjoyable. But, at about 65% through the book it get really good.
The introduction of mustang makes this book go from okay to really good.
I think I will take a break between now and reading the next one.

I don't give it 5 stars because of the bits of romance (I generally don't like romance in these types of books).

But I actually really loved this. I don't read this genre much, but I'm so glad I decided to give this one a chance.
I am HOOKED.

And, yes, Brown is right, I'm 90% sure that I'm going to bloodydamn love these books.

Incredible execution on a very cheesy premise. It took me a long time to dive in, but once I did it was an absolute rollercoaster (in a good way).

This was very violent and graphic but so so powerful. This world explores the violence of power hierarchies. The caste system is not perfect nor is the world explored entirely but it does such a good job at what it tries to. It is a slow burn corruption arc where the mmc just barely figures out his errors but the ending still leaves room for doubt.

I retract my entire review because apparently Brown only supports decolonization and rebellion and the oppressed when it comes to fiction but supports the genocide of Palestinians through the narrative of “self defensive” despite the fact that Israel has dropped over 12,000+ bombs on Gaza in the span of 18 days (killing over 6,000 civilians as of October 25, 2023) which has the same fire power as the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima.

Support of rebellion, support of the oppressed when it only applies to fiction is negligent and transparent.

Edit: He also quoted the actual war criminal Henry Kissinger and said: “for those hating on Kissinger, LOL, read everything. Especially if it’s your enemies textbook. Knowledge kills evil. Stay in your own echo chamber and you will only ever know your opinion.” So he can go fuck himself
