honestly I got 100 pages in and had to take a break due to the made up words that made the world building more challenging than I was expecting.

very much a Man book that was unexpectedly gruesome. consistent “wow they really went there” moments with some of the actions of characters.

not completely sold on the likability of the main character or the characters in general but the hunger games vibe of the story intrigues me enough I’m going to keep going with the series

idk what i was expecting but this book was craaaazy. i love a book with politics and this books has LAYERS of it. i went in completely blind and i think that made it so much better. on that note, the synopsis totally gives away the first 40% of the book. never read the synopsis. ALSO: why are we giving away what happens in the chapter with the chapter title. if there’s going to be a betrayal, i don’t want their name to be the chapter heading!

the aspects of found family are made so much more interesting with the layers of enemies and the plot twists in the last third just kept coming. darrow is such an interesting character and his character arc goes crazy. knowing that there are many more books makes it even better. will be continuing.

don’t read if you have a weak stomach

Every chapter I'd put the book down because I was just stressed out about the development of the journey. so many inspected twists!
it got me so involved in the characters and the politics of the world. I'll certainly read the rest of the series

my only dislike was that the emotional impacts on the characters weren't very well developed and I'd like to know more about the main character's feelings.
