It definitely got better. Follows a familiar story arc where the world is divided into the have and have nots and a have not is going to destroy the status quo. It borrows from hunger games with a game that all the kids are playing in to prove themselves. There was a lack of character development that made me not connect with Darrow's plight or his pain in losing his wife. But the idea that he could not humanize the golds and wondering if he could still connect with the reds is an interesting twist that I want to see through. However, I'm scared that the rest of the series is going to go down a rabbit hole if politicking and battle descriptions that I'm just not that into.

At first the world building was a lot. Felt like paragraphs of info dumps. Also, some of the descriptions were hard for me to picture, maybe that's a personal problem though lol. But after it gets going you get sucked in. I love all the morally grey characters. Also, a few of the plot twists got me! Will definitely be reading the rest of the series.
