From other reviews on this book, I believe I got this book from a list of books for fans of Downton Abbey. This book does not belong on that list. The only thing it has in common with Downton is that there's an estate with servants. Hardly a feature that's unique for books set in Britain. It's also in the wrong time period for the story it is trying to tell. The themes are all over the place. Also, like others, I found it cliche and too familiar. Maybe I read too many of the same types of books. I think Kate Morton does the unraveling of past family mysteries way better than this one. The ending is a dizzy pace of reveals. There are 2 that are really out of place in the story and I don't think should have been included in Julia's journey.

classic lucinda riley style but knocked off stars for the godawful way, stereotypical and vaguely racist way they made Lydia talk...honestly!

This book ended up being disappointing. I enjoyed the first half; it made me excited to keep reading to find out the deep, dark family secret. Unfortunately the second half really dragged and by the time the secret was revealed, I had figured it out. After the “big reveal”, there was still 20% of the book left. I felt like the last 20% was written by a different author. The numerous plot twists thrown in and bad dialogue felt so different from the rest of the book.
