well it took me 22 days to finish this book but i guess i still liked it

I have a new favorite hockey romance book… maybe even a new favorite sports romance book. Becka Mack’s 2nd published work is a 5-star read and she has immediately put herself on my authors to read forever list. I think I was about 40% in when I texted one of my friends saying I think I just found my favorite sports romance book- it was THAT good.

Carter is definitely a playboy with a heart of gold who meets his match in Olivia who turns him down at every available opportunity. His past and her coming to terms with the fact that maybe he’s not the guy she thought he was provide the main conflict for the book which is nothing new in sports romance books. Carter is cocky and funny and yet so awkward (Olivia too) and I just fell in love with every single interaction of theirs. It was so reminiscent of real life where not everything goes smoothly and nerves are a real thing! This book’s shining moments that set it apart from other books of this type is the clear and mature communication between the two main characters- I was just blown away. The entire book focuses on them learning to trust and love and communicate with each other and even in the moment near the end as there always is where the 2 main characters have their moment of conflict, the way it was handled was done so well in my opinion (ps I predicted that moment pretty early on and was so nervous the whole book trying to figure out how it was going to play out and then shockingly happy with how it was handled). Becka Mack- I cannot wait to read book 2 and the rest of the books you’ll write in the future. You’ve got such a great career ahead of you and I can’t wait to follow along with!

Carter is the biggest dick and Olivia is a pick me.

3.5 stars
Read this if you want an MMC with the ultimate golden retriever energy. I honestly was about to quit this book about a quarter in. It just didn’t capture me. It’s definitely a character led read instead of plot led. The plot is about their life, surprise. BUT, it did eventually win me over. I loved the dialogue, the hockey team dynamics, and how real this felt for a new relationship. However, it felt slow to start, there were multiple mistakes that should have been caught in a final edit, and at times it seemed to skip over moments I really wanted more of. Now I have to continue the series because I’m invested in the lives of these made-up characters that are currently some of my closest friends. NO SHAME!
