BECAUSE VENUS CROSSED AN ALPINE VIOLET ON THE DAY THAT I WAS BORN by Mona Høvring translated from the Norwegian by Kari Dickson and Rachel Rankin is a delightful novel! It’s about two sisters, Martha and Ella, who stay in a mountain village hotel to reconnect after Martha’s discharge from a mental hospital.
.
At 140 pages this is definitely a book that can be read in one sitting and the pacing really propelled me to keep reading. I quite enjoyed the story structure with the chapter titles. I loved the alpine setting and the condensed timeline. I enjoyed the central themes of sisterhood, family connections and how people can change. And I love the stunning cover!
.
This is another great translated book that I’ve read this year! I’ve really been loving reading books from around the world. So far I’ve read Norwegian, Japanese, French, Chinese, Finnish, Spanish, Serbian-Croatian and Icelandic books!
.
Thank you to Bookhug Press for my advance reading copy!
