πͺ΄ Bookish Thoughts
Top 5 of the year, no question. The first 20% was a slow start. But once it picked up, it hit all the emotions.
I adored Ben. My sweet, soft, plant-loving, people pleasing and sweater vest king. His anxiety was written with so much care and authenticity. He was a tender and deeply feeling soul.
And Eleonore? My heart broke for her. She was trapped for so long and had survived so much. I loved how Ben never pushed her! He simply offered safety and softness. And in return, she became this fierce protector for him. She understood him and helped calm his spiraling thoughts. Their dynamic was healing in every sense of the word πΈπ₯Ή

Really fun and cute book that is basically a simple romance in a fantasy setting. Definitely going to look out the next ones.

I was curious to see how a werewolf/half-vampire relationship would go, but I guess when the werewolf doesn't enjoy being a werewolf, it turns out to be more of a human/vampire relationship. I really would have liked to see Elenore interact with werewolf Ben instead of just alluding to a future meetup, but alas.
That said, I LOVED Ben. He was instantly 100% relatable. Elenore was less so. She was honestly a bit much for me, although I enjoyed the dichotomy of her being so stabby but also so curious about the world. The fact that she kept a list of random factoids to look up was adorable.
I think the most difficult aspect of the book for me was that I instantly knew who the Witch of the Woods was in Ch. 2. It wasn't until 75% of the way through the book that Ben and Elenore find out - and it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's read the previous book. While I usually love some dramatic irony, this one was a bit tiresome. I guess maybe that's why the plot pacing felt a bit different as well from the other two books.
In the first two books, the characters had clear goals and went through steps the entire way to achieve those goals. I realize Ben had a lot going on (part of the conflict for the story), but it felt like Elenore's action towards her goal got shoved into the last 25% of the novel, minus a couple brief mentions of attempts to find the witch here and there. Otherwise, the story focused more on character building, so I guess it felt more slice-of-life than anything else, which is fine but not always my cup of tea.
