This book starts out good and ends incredible. It seemed slow in the middle, but it’s so so unbelievably worth the read. A beautiful look into Appalachia, addiction, overdose, the foster system, and resilience.

This book was well written, and had amazing imagery and storytelling. That being said, this is a very dark book. Be prepared to be bummed out for like 80% of this book. Overall a good read, but I honestly wouldn’t recommend because of how bummed out it made me.

This was a tremendous slog for me. The ending kind of pulled it together, and it does do a good job at showing the systemic violence of poverty and pain pills in Appalachia. But phew, it is not literature, and I would have put it down a number of times if it hadn't been a book club book for me. I could see how, if you read mostly books like this, you would only read 6 or 7 books per year.

Incredibly moving and engrossing modern-day take on David Copperfield in the Appalachia region. I kept having to pause the audiobook - wonderfully narrated by Charlie Thurston - to catch my breath or cry, or just to process what I'd just heard.
