I think the author did do a good job putting the reader in the place of the mc. Seriously felt disoriented reading this

after hearing lots of mixed opinions about this book, i was ready to dislike it. but i loved it. so sharp and oddly satisfying, ‘my year of rest and relaxation’ is by far the most compelling book i’ve read in a while. our central character is awful but so so interesting. i loved the way the book slipped in and out of her present and her reminiscing about the past. i loved the descriptions and the metaphors. i thought the ending was satisfying and vague and beautiful and twisted all at the same time. moshfegh stirs up so much unease throughout this book so deftly. i would thoroughly recommend it!

At first it made me romanticize sleep, then made me wary of it. In the end it wasn't about sleep at all

The main character is hard to like, she's rude and distant, but in many ways painfully relatable. The book looks at depression and untreated trauma in a way that is honest and cruel. It balances sympathy with disdain all at once and its a challenging subject to read.

Well written, but the main character was so horribly unlikable that I hated it. All the most interesting parts of the book happen during her drug induced blackouts so we only get to see the MC insufferably speculating about where she might have been. I don't think this author is for me at all.

‘“It’s because I’m fat.” She really wasn’t. She was very pretty, in fact.’

This came after just mentioning that the woman had an eating disorder! I will not be wasting the time to discover if this book redeems itself.
