I really liked the first book in this series "The City of Ember" but the second and third books were not as good. They lacked the sense of adventure, discovery, and suspense that the first book had. The fourth book "The Diamond of Darkhold" was a return to the style of the first book. It had the same amount of adventure although it was not as suspenseful. Once again, the plot was a bit farfetched and relied on the mass survival of very fragile products to come together. But it is the adventure and discovery that makes this series entertaining, so just ignore the fact that the author asks us to suspend our disbelief as much as she does.

Actually quite enjoyed this one. Not only did the characters get to return to the city of Ember, but they got to recover a lot of their stuff, and tie up loose ends. This book answered a lot of questions, and wrapped the series up well enough that I get the impression no more stories will be written for this series. But there is no need. It was wrapped up satisfactorily and people resumed their lives.

All in all a good fun read of a future that will never be. Thank God! :)

⍋ 8/10 ⍋ !MILD SPOILERS AHEAD!

The Diamond of Darkhold is the third volume in The City of Ember storyline and the final book revolving Lina and Doon. The story takes place a few months after The People of Sparks, meaning that the main characters are now 13 years old, but also that winter arrived and the odds are not in their favor. The reminiscence and nostalgia of Lina and Doon going on an adventure to save their city, in this case village, warmed my heart to the brim. Yet going back into Ember, walking down the once-lit streets and bringing back all those memories of what had been their home made my heart break a little.

Apart from closure and a worthy ending, this book brings a few laughs, especially during the scenes with the Trogg family, and a sense of unity and equality between the villagers. It lacks the angering and worrying parts of The People of Sparks and adds adventure, love and teamwork back on the table.

Side note: I read The City of Ember, The People of Sparks and The Diamond of Darkhold before The Prophet of Yonwood, not like the author published them, thus I was completely unprepared for the last few paragraphs of the final chapter. Those who’ve read the books will understand my absolutely hilarious reaction of being caught so utterly off-guard when I read those few sentences with any prior context whatsoever. For a brief second I felt like Jim from the Office, just staring off into the distance trying to understand how on earth that scene had been thrown into the mix, and then the book ended.

Lina and Doon returned to Ember and meet the Troggs. It was just the ending I didn't like.

It is a really good book. I will not deny that. It just feels as though it’s trying to continue a dying story. I personally feel that the series should have ended in one book. I do like knowing how the series ends but sometimes, it’s good to keep the readers in suspense.
