Thanks Netgalley for a copy to read and review.

If I wasn't so immersed in the dragon King series I would probably have given this book more attention. This is definitely a spin off but without all the mystery. This story captures the Reapers and who they are and what they stand for. I enjoyed it but I'm more interested right now in Rhi and her dragon king. Still it's part of the whole picture and you can't go wrong with that. Four star entertainment.

After finishing [b:Passion Ignites|23723790|Passion Ignites (Dark Kings, #7)|Donna Grant|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1434946694s/23723790.jpg|43333415] I was so looking forward to reading this book and learning about the Reapers. And I was not disappointed. This was a great start to her new series with fantastic characters and great story. With Death's obvious interest in Rhi, the tie in was there but only slightly. I'm definitely hoping that in the future the Reapers will have more contact with the Dragon Kings.

To act as executioners of those judged guilty, Death has recruited seven Fae (both light and dark) and given them more power and stronger magic. They are the Reapers. Upon agreeing with Death's offer, they have few rules to follow but the ones they do make sense and you can't blame Death for them.

Baylon is one of the Reapers, and he's about to brake one of those rules.

With the war between the Dragon Kings and the Dark Fae underway, the Reapers have been called back to control the Dark that have overrun the city. And they're all quite enjoying being able to kill so many Dark. When new orders come to them to kill all the half fae, it's the first time they question their orders. Death is the only one they answer to and they can't figure out why they would be told to do such, so each refuses even knowing the consequences. All is not as it seems though, and soon enough they realize an enemy from the long past is back with revenge first on his mind.

It's by chance that while out, Baylon comes across a half fae. For pretty much her whole life, Jordyn has had an almost obsession with learning about the fae. Her interest only grows when Lexi showed up the police station talking about the red eyed person who killed her friend.
SpoilerI was actually kind of hoping that somehow Jordyn would learn that Lexi had in fact not left to go back to the states and actually became a mate to a Dragon King, but that never happened...
While Jordyn has always wanted to meet a fae, it seems that everywhere she looks is only Dark. Until Baylon. After first seeing her at the library, he ends up following her the rest of the day. He didn't intend for her to see him but when she is cornered by a bunch of Dark he has no choice but to unveil himself to take care of them. From there everything spirals out of control for those two.

Baylon is allowed to sleep with a woman just once, but ends up spending the whole night with Jordyn. Their attraction towards each other is something that neither can fight against. Even if it results in their deaths. When Baylon's leader finds out about this, he surprisingly doesn't put an end to it. Instead he fills Jordyn in on the details of many things and gets her to agree to act as bait to draw out their enemies. But things never go as planned and the enemy always has the upper hand.

I had spent the whole book anticipating just how Baylon would be able to keep Jordyn, so when it came down to it I was actually a little disappointed. Instead of being a special fae reason or something, Death had decided that Jordyn had proven herself and could also be helpful.

This war is stacked against the Reapers so it's probably only going to get harder from here. Their enemy has intimate knowledge of the Reapers and their magic is stronger than it should be, plus their overwhelming numbers. It's a fight I can't wait to read more about.

The blurb for DARK ALPHA'S CLAIM pulled me in and since I've read quite a few of Grant's other series I figured I would enjoy it. Even though Grant's Reaper series is new, there are many mentions of characters from previous series. I don't think everyone will be confused or feel like you are missing something, but if you want to learn more about the world and the characters you might want to backtrack and read through the other three series that take place in the same world. Because there are so many books to get through, I don't see many new readers doing that though.

Since DARK ALPHA'S CLAIM is a paranormal romance, I will start with the romance. It was hot, but I expected nothing less of a Donna Grant book. The heat kicks off pretty quickly between Baylon and Jordyn and it never simmers down. It's insta-attraction and insta-love and Grant pulls it off with ease. It's pretty clear from the start—even though Baylon insists at first that he will walk away from Jordyn—that both would do anything for the other and they can't possibly live life without the other there. I thought Jordyn fit in with the other Reapers with ease. Speaking of the other reapers, I already have my favorites and I just might pick up book two if one of them are featured.

So why only 3 stars? There was a few things. There are a LOT of characters right off the bat. It makes it very hard to keep them all straight and it also makes it a bit hard to get to know them all. On top of that I had a hard time staying in the story and it just felt like something was missing and I couldn't figure out what it was.

Wayyyyyy too instalove-y for me, I felt no connection to the characters and their "romance" whatsoever.

It was all "I'd die for you even though we met five seconds ago" and I just couldn't get passed it.

Dark Alpha’s Claim is a fiery hot urban fantasy romance. To be honest I have no idea where to categorize this but the setting feels very fantasy although the connecting series has dragons but it has a strong “fae” presence in it so that is definitely fantasy. And it has a similar setting to that of “KMM Fever Series”. But the romance is highly present which I love. I do enjoy a urban fantasy setting. I also hadn’t realized how SHORT these books are and I am kinda sad about it haha once I read this one I am now realizing I should have read the Dark Kings fully before jumping into this one. Because while I didn’t see much of the Dark Kings, they were referred to and we do have some interaction and I have a feeling we will see much more of them as I delve deeper in the series so I am highly debating if I should finish the Dark Kings. If any of you have read both series, let me know if I should continue or go back and finish up the Dark Kings.

I am really fascinated with how Donna Grant wrote this book and I was hooked from the beginning and what a quick fun read this turned out to be. Its only 150 pages, so the romance builds quickly, its one of those forbidden themes. The hero is a reaper and is forbidden to have any intimate romantic relationship, and his job is to hunt evil dark fae. But he and Jordyn quickly fall for each other in one night (and yes its instant love) but they can’t be together or they could both die. But we see them both go on a journey as our heroine is being hunted by Dark Fae, and her only hope of survival is by standing with the reapers.

I absolutely adored how the plot developed and it kept me on the edge all the way through. I was so intrigued by how this author would implement this one and seeing how she would develop this story and while it happened quickly, I became so invested with these characters. The combination of all the elements and seeing how this one really sets the stage for all the others was such a treat to read. I really just wanted more and more of this one and seeing how this wrapped up but also gave you a teaser of what was to come has me eager to read more into this fantastical world that Donna Grant has built.

Highly anticipated and worth the wait! OMG! I couldn't wait to read this! When I first learned that this was going to be a spinoff to the DARK KINGS but with the REAPERS as the main focus, at first I thought "how"... and of course, I should have just known that Donna would have provided her readers with a drool worthy, alpha hero and an independent and smart heroine that that readers would fall for, along with a story that would make them not want to put the book down! This is exactly what she accomplished with DARK ALPHA’S CLAIM. While we learn a little bit about the Reapers and some about them as a whole, we can already tell that each of them are delicious and will bring the ‘alpha male’ without the prick. Donna is known for writing smart woman and I’m certain she will continue to bring readers heroines that not only will we enjoy reading but we can connect with.

This was a fantastic start that not only provided us with some insight into what we can expect from this series, but we got an “AHA!” moment from the DARK KINGS Series. As this is the spinoff series and currently the Reapers are part of the storyline of the DARK KINGS, I’m sure there may be some overlap between the two series going forward. With that said… I believe you can read this as a standalone, however, I think you’ll decide that you’ll want to read the DARK KINGS series to be more in the ‘know’ as well as it’s a fantastic series and you wouldn’t regret meeting these Scots who happen to be dragon shifters! Just sayin’, lol.

This is an interesting spin on a classic story that many if not most cultures around the world have… the ‘boogie man’ and of course ‘Death’ itself. Speaking of Death… that is one interesting character and once you read DARK ALPHA’S CLAIM, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. I’m definitely looking forward to that story!

I couldn’t put it down! All the characters were interesting and you wanted to know more about them and their story. We got a peak into the next book and it’s going to be ooohhh sooo good!!

I'm kicking myself in the butt for not getting to this series sooner. It is intermingled with the Dark Kings series which I'm totally caught up on, so reading Dark Alpha's Claim shot me back a few Dark King books.

It is definitely possible to jump in and start The Reapers on its' own. However, since it is intermingled with the Dark Kings, there are a lot of references to the Dragons and what is happening in their world. I know I found it hard when I first started reading the Dark Kings, not knowing it was a spin-off of Grant's Warriors series. The character overlap had me struggling the first few books trying to figure out who certain people were. I think that if someone tries to jump into The Reapers, they may find the same kind of troubles.

I've been curious about the Reapers since the first one was mentioned that we thought was following Rhi. They are this group that are under Death's direction and all the Fae are terrified of them. There are many rules that the Reapers must live by. Of course, one of them would be that they could never have a relationship. In fact, a past Reaper has believed to been put to death after revolting when Death killed his lover. Needless to say, this plays a big part in the relationship between Baylon and Jordyn.

Besides the Reapers, the book seems to focus on half fae. I had never thought of that possibility before since Dark Fae do not leave survivors of their sexual encounters and Light Fae can only have sex with a human once. But I guess once is enough, or some Dark Fae are not as Dark as they would like to appear. Either way, these half fae seem to be a focus for the group. Of course, Jordyn is one of those half fae, so does have some qualities of the Fae.

Dark Alpha's Claim was a short read with a lot of action, establishing the job of a Reaper with some peppering of romance. It was definitely insta-love, but the threat of what that love could do to each of them is a heavy cloud over their heads. We are introduced to a good group of characters and I'm excited for each one's story. I'm hoping it won't take me long to get caught up!This review was originally posted on Rantings of a Reading Addict

So far, the introduction of this series is pretty good. I find the world verse concept is pretty interesting and I would probably start the others soon.

I think the thing that I enjoyed most here are the characters that I find truly interesting.

I'm no sure if I enjoyed the insta-love kind of romance so far as well as the plot that I find superficial and shallow? The writing is good though. So yeah, that's it so far. 3.5 ⭐️

It wasn't great and I didn't feel much of the attraction or love between the two MCs other than lust from both their Fae heritage good looks.

Jordyn has been obsessed with the fae her whole life and knows they are real. Being saved by Baylon thrusts her into this secret world and brings new light to her heritage.

Jordyn and Baylon have instant chemistry. Their forbidden love is captivating and full of emotional anguish. Grant really knows how to captivate readers with strong, compelling and emotional characters.

For the first book in this series this was really good. I do think it will be helpful if you have read the previous series because it will make it easier to understand who all the characters are. I am excited to see more of the Reapers and find out more about
