Another beautiful story from Angeline Boulley! I love the way she writes. It’s not just a compelling story but a love letter to Ojibwe culture. There’s a reverence for their beliefs and traditions that I really appreciate.

YA + Indigenous rep + mystery!

Perry is the laidback trouble-maker twin & the best fisher on Sugar Island. All she wants is a chill summer fishing & doing whatever she wants.

But a rising number of missing Indigenous women gets closer & closer to home and as Perry’s family becomes involved in a high profile murder investigation, Perry begins to question everything.

In order to reclaim belongings for her tribe, Perry must take matters into her own hands, only able to count on a few people.

✨learning about Indigenous history

I found it so fascinating and informative how Boulley used not only the plot but specific characters to represent how Indigenous bodies are disregarded and devalued. It was heartbreaking to read how so many artifacts and people’s belongings haven’t been returned to tribes because white people devalue Indigenous people.

I loved how so much of this book was about Perry navigating injustice and learning her value. So much of this book is heavy and hard to read, but I learned so much.

I also adored Eric & I loved the friendships Perry built with the Misfits.

Everything else I want to say is a spoiler!

This was a re-read for me & I loved it just as much this time. However, I will say, now that I’ve read Sisters in the Wind (book 3), I wish she would have flipped this book with Sisters because the things I didn’t like the first time I read it now make more sense having read Sisters. Once Sisters is published in September, I would highly recommend reading in order 1, 3, 2 for all books to be enjoyable!

✨Representation: mostly Indigenous cast; trichotillomania
‼️Content: kidnapping; cultural appropriation; racism; murder; confinement; rape; sexual assault / harassment / violence; and more

This novel was spiritually healing. There is so much pain Indigenous continue to face and being allowed to claim their history and ancestors is one of them. The novel did a fantastic job showing the struggles that many tribes face to this day and will continue to do so because of how difficult the system makes it to get hold of what belongs to them. Perry truly was an inspiring character, and I loved following along with her. There were hard truths to face in the novel, but it was done in a way through power and pride for these wonderful characters. The mystery aspect was well done. I never knew what to expect and was left yearning for more. Angeline is a fantastic writer! She knows how to keep you hooked and fall in love with the characters and culture.
