I was really looking forward to reading this book but unfortunately I do think it falls into the "sophomore slump" category of sequels. One thing that I enjoyed about Firekeeper's Daughter was that Daunis was older than your typical YA protagonist, so while it's completely fine that Perry is only 16, it wasn't what I was expecting. Plot-wise, there was too much going on in this book and the ending felt rushed as Boulley endeavored to tie up every loose end. When discussing this with my book club, we all struggled to keep track of the large cast of characters as some of them would end up being critical to the story, while others were never mentioned again. While this can be read as a standalone, the two of us who had read Firekeeper's Daughter had an easier time because we were already familiar with some of these characters.
Two elements of this book that I loved were Perry's developing friendships and learning about NAGPRA alongside her. I happened to be visiting some large museums while reading this, and it certainly made me look at the collections with a more critical eye towards their claimed "provenance." Perry was a fun character and her deep appreciation of her Ojibwe culture was heart-warming to experience. I likely wouldn't be as critical of this book if I hadn't come in with such high expectations, and I do plan to continue reading Boulley's works.
