this was crazy. the kind of book i’ll still think about a year from now.

Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Give me a story about a troublesome mother/daughter relationship mixed with a deluded cult and you have my attention. Top that off with a killer cover and I am smitten. Godshot by Chelsea Bieker had me from the moment I cracked it open.

Godshot felt like a mixture of White Oleander with a touch of The Sound of Gravel. I am drawn to books with about a dysfunctional mother/daughter dynamic. For a debut novel, Bieker knocks it out of the park and I look forward to what she puts out next.

If White Oleander and Demon Copperhead had a baby, it would be this book. Lyrical, engaging and thoughtful.

Total page turner centering on broken people, belief, and mothers and daughters. My only complaint was how neatly it wrapped up, but sometimes it’s nice to get a happy ending after such a difficult story. You get something from that in fiction that you usually can’t in nonfiction (but speaking of nonfiction- if you’re interested in a nonfiction take on a young woman coming of age in a cult pick up Sex Cult Nun).
