I have to admit the beginning was slow and I almost put it down because it was all so cooky but the story quickly unfolds into a bunch of “wtf” moments! The characters were intriguing and I liked how as evil as some of them seem the author was able to make you feel a little empathy for most of them. I truly grew to LOVE Daisy and I truly could not predict anything that happened and I love that! I got this book for $5 at Barnes & Noble and it was so worth it!

"if god sat right here in front of you and I said to eat your own foot. You'd do it. Vern said girls are too emotional and that less information is easier. You'd make something out of it. That wasn't even real. and here you are doing just that proving him right"
"If god asked me to eat my own foot, I hope I'd realize he was no god"

a cult, mommy issues, deconstructing and religious trauma….was this book written for me?
a wonderful and awful book that is brutal, sometimes hard to stomach, but brings divinity to girlhood and womanhood alike. The strength in the feminine. The light in what is condemned as dark. beautiful.
the beginning is a little slow and slightly disjointed but i rushed to get the ending.

This book will stick with me for awhile. On the outset this seems like a book about a cult but it's also a book about family and especially the relationship between mother and daughter.

“It hurts”.
“Get used to it, she said. Women have a long history of suffering.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Lacey May lives in Peaches, California. Drought has taken over and her and her neighbors have turned to their cult leader, Pastor Vern, for salvation in the form of rain. Godshot is a powerful coming of age story that is gritty and dazzling and an enchanting story. It will pull you in with the imagery so stark it leaves you feeling like you are in the drought yourself. This book is an experience in and of itself and it’s pages hold a story that will punch you to the core.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Chelsea Bieker handles themes of loneliness, motherhood, sexuality, religion, gender constructs in a patriarchal society, and more. None of these are overdone and are seamlessly discussed through a dazzling cast of characters and a series of (mostly unfortunate) events. If you are to ever judge a book by its cover, do it with this one. The story will leave you teary eyed and hopeful for Lacey May as she comes of age with a fierce resilience.

CW: rape, suicide, incest, alcoholism
