Only a few volumes are available at my local library. I can’t find the rest of the series anywhere that I wouldn’t have to pay to finish it. I fit have $100+ to do that. May return later when the series is more accessible.

Cherryton Academy is a high school populated by anthropomorphic animals and divided between herbivores and carnivores. One night, an alpaca student, Tem, is murdered and eaten by a carnivore student, one he was familiar with. Cherryton's thrown into chaos by the grisly event and suspicion falls on a wolf named Legoshi, not helped by Legoshi's eccentric, even menacing, behavior. Both Tem and Legoshi were involved in the Drama Club, run by the aloof red deer Louis. At the same time, a dwarf rabbit named Haru suffers cruel rumors about her after a guy tried to cheat on his girlfriend with her. Haru unwittingly draws the attention of Legoshi, her vulnerable appearance awakening something dark in him. Is he the killer after all, or is something else going on?
Beastars is a peculiar comic, a dark high school drama with furry characters. The sketchy illustrations give it a surreal, almost delirious air that perfectly fits the dark moments like the murder or Legoshi's temptation to eat his classmates. Itagaki Paru's use of black is stunning and nightmarish. The characters are fascinating because it's hard to read much into them at this stage; Legoshi's troubled but there's no concrete answer if he's the killer yet. Louis is a mysterious figure, clearly important but he has yet to step into the limelight. Haru's the most understandable to me so far but does she really lack any mysteries or is there more to her? It's a fascinating beginning and I love seeing comics about furry characters. This is one I have to follow

Rating with the entire series in mind: It's absurd, it's pretentious, and I wholeheartedly love it for both of these qualities. I won't pretend like everyone should like it to the degree that I do, it is not without its flaws. Buuut, when it lands, it lands.
The final arcfell a little flat for me, but IMO, it still delivered on the majority of themes presented throughout the story, and that's what feels most important to me.
5/5 stars in my heart
