Ugh. Should have abandoned this one, but I was hoping the ending would have some shock value and be worth it. I was wrong
This is my first book by this author and I had high expectations. I was ultimately left disappointed.
It starts off very well and the writing is solid throughout. I kept on reading, even when it started to get a little repetitive and silly. I also found it just a little too ‘vanilla’ for me and it lacks any emotional depth or opinion on certain issues.
The reason it got 3 stars and not 2 was completely based on the writing! With this level of silliness I probably would have given up with a lesser skilled writer.
Think I shall have to try another by this author, there is talent here.
*I am detecting a theme in my first few reads of the year, liking the writing just not enamoured with any story yet 🤔*

B.A. Paris created a crafty novel with corkscrew twists! I was going back and forth on who was actually leaving Russian dolls. After a number of years missing, is it truly Layla leaving the dolls to mess with Finn and Ellen? He is going to marry Ellen. Which after he was the center of a police investigation for Layla's disappearance does not sit well with many people.
But if it is Layla, why now? She could have returned at any time so is this revenge or something more complex?

Definitely preferred Behind Closed Doors to this one, but I’m willing to give her third novel a shot.
I had a hard time finishing this one. I didn’t care for the writing nor the story line. The ending, as in all thrillers, did throw me for a loop, but also pissed me off at the same time. It was my first B.A. Paris read and almost made me not want to read others by her.
I rate this book 3.5 - 4 stars. In my opinion, not as good as the author’s other two books. I figured out about halfway through what was going on. It was still dark and twisty though.
What did I just listen to?
No, really. I’m sitting here just going huh? And wtf? And wow....
Layla disappeared 12 years ago. Today, her boyfriend, Finn, is getting ready to marry her sister, Ellen. Yeah, I know, there’s a bit of squick factor there. But that’s when Russian dolls start showing up. Someone out there knows something about Layla and her disappearance. Who? What?
Not a bad tale, I’m getting into this audiobook thing!

"Bring me back, before it's too late."
This was an odd one. The story held me at first - as I got to know Finn through both the past and the present and also Ellen. Ellen was an interesting current distraction as she was the here and now but didn't seem to fully have Finn's heart. For the first half of the book, Finn felt very dark and unknown, angry and yet sweet. He was a bit creepy is his need and want of Layla.
And Layla is the crux of the story. She's Finn's previous obsession - his love, his everything. But she went missing 12 years ago and he seems to know more than he is letting on - as you weave through his memories and the lead up to that night.
The story, however, seemed to bog down after Part II started. Even though answers were coming, they felt like they took forever to be revealed. Somewhere in there, the tension and interest broke and it was tough to keep reading and keep feeling engaged. I'm glad I found out the end but this one definitely wasn't my favorite.

fast-paced
Weird af - 2.5*
I've been in a proper book slump over half-term with only fanfiction as my reading focus. I really wanted to read a book today and just flicked through my Kindle library to find this.
It reminded me of Harlan Coben but not as good. I think the ideas were good but it just wasn't well-executed. I also don't think the first person worked. It was just odd and I found it jarring.
Yeah I wouldn't recommend tbh.
