This collection was a mixed bag for me. Some poems were excellent; for instance, Jones writes about grief with crystal clarity that instantly reveals his deep familiarity with the subject. There was also one poem about the ephemerality of a summer tomato that I keep thinking about. Other poems were less engaging and personal.

Really excellent collection. All of the poems I enjoyed in concert, and there are a handful of poems that stand incredibly strong on their own or as series of poems (“Saeed, or The Other One: I-IV,” “Against Progeny,” “Little Richard Listens to Pat Boone Sing ‘Tutti Frutti,’” and “Performing as Miss Calypso …” especially, on this read) as well.

Saeed writes with such honesty, reflection and,
humor. He asks you to take him seriously and calls you out when you don’t. He keeps many of his cards face-up, to show you he has nothing to hide and it’s gorgeous, though i wish to be seduced a bit more.
