i thought the poker journey was just a really gripping story in and of itself. but there are good lessons here! you'll have to be OK with some short-term variability to let a good process win out over the long term. plus nothing is all skill, ever. it's true.

Wow! This book was way more interesting than I anticipated. I chose it because Anne Bogel (Modern Mrs. Darcy) put it on her list of best books for this year. It appealed to me because my dad is a poker player. But what I found in this book was so much more than promised. Maria's writing makes you feel like you're having a conversation with a friend. Her pacing is perfect and I'm already finding myself referencing this book when talking to people. What a great way to end the year!

Highly recommend! This book goes much deeper than poker if you’re paying attention.

My expectations were high after seeing the widespread praise for this book. While it was interesting, I didn't find it as gripping as I'd thought it would be.

Excellent deep dive

A journalist decides to investigate whether she can go from never playing poker to compete and win the WSOP. This is not any journalism, though; the author is a psychology PhD. from Columbia, and she is getting help from world famous poker champion Erik Siedel.
I loved her approach, her honesty, and the clarity of her writing. It is inspiring and interesting.
My favorite book this year.

Part biography, part exploration of the world of poker, part psychology of life. Ultimately it is an affirmation of life. Biggest takeaway here: pay attention to your life.
Very engaging story of the author's journey to master not only poker, but herself as well. Flagged a bit for me in the Macau section but overall a satisfying read I would recommend to others.

The author spent a year learning how to play poker, the math behind it, but focusing more on the psychology behind both reading your opponents, and controlling your own thoughts and reactions. Interesting, but I think it could have been a lot shorter.

Interesting.
