I absolutely loved this book! It's the story of Hannie in 1875, a freed slave searching for her family that was long ago split up at a slave auction and Benny in 1987, a new teacher at a poor rural school trying not to let her students fall through the cracks in the system. Each storyline is engaging in it's own way, but as the connections begin to appear, it's hard to put this book down. I really didn't want it to end and I wish more time had been spent on the final chapters for each of the main characters because I wanted to know even more. I loved the author's note, acknowledgements, and the inclusion of actual ads that were published in the Lost Friends column of the Southwestern. Though a sad part of history, it was interesting to learn of and I'm glad the stories are preserved in New Orleans.
