I enjoyed the second and third parts of this book much more than the first, and I trudged through the first part because I’ve enjoyed other books by this author so I was hopeful it would redeem itself, which it only sort of did? My main issue with the first part of the book is that I didn’t find the main character (or most of the sketches she was pitching) funny, with the exception of the dog internet searches. The behind-the-scenes SNL stuff was interesting but I prefer to read Amy Poehler or Tina Fey’s memoirs for that.
later, I  really enjoyed the emails and the start of their relationship, but there are so many communication issues and unhealthy dynamics that it was hard to root for them as a couple.

Besides how frustrating I found the author’s sentence structure to be, I also found the novel to be incredibly unexciting. Sally describes her first marriage as “boring and not that funny,” which I think applies to the book itself. For something called romantic comedy, there was very little of the latter (I laughed once) and an unintriguing former. The couple is only in the same vicinity as each other in the last third of the book and the first third features an overly-detailed daily account of what makes a Saturday Night Live-like show happen with painstaking descriptions of every unfunny sketch (and the second third is the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, which I personally try to forget).

Much of the discourse also feels pretty dated in the way chronically online people in the 2010s were performatively trying to cover every social justice issue in their online conversations. The feminist rants feel outdated in a gen x/elder millennial white feminism way. After forcing myself to finish the novel, I was hoping for a solid ending, but the epilogue felt like a weird summary/throwaway chapter that was a complete afterthought. I’m glad that at least there’s only up from here for the rest of my 2024 books!
