I love SNL send ups and I love romantic comedies and I love folks wondering about their behaviors and I love partners choosing each other and that sometimes looking/feeling/being incorrect.

Also, this was my first commit to a pandemic plot line and I found it was, for me, the right tone AND mood.

I requested this as my BOTM in April. I’d heard some hype about the book, but sadly I don’t think the story lived up to it. The premise of a late night comedy writer falling for the musical guest was intriguing, but ultimately I found the main characters to be unlikeable and unrelatable. By the end of the story, the female lead had, in my opinion, very little growth while the male lead remained stagnant the entire book. Additionally, I didn’t love the constant reference to current events. I found that it took away from the escapism of the genre, and often felt performative on the author’s part. The only time I felt it served the story was the middle portion in which the two main characters email back and forth during the pandemic. However, the fact that they had more chemistry over email than any of the dialogue in the book should tell you everything you need to know about the romance aspect of this book.

Taylor Swift songs: “Afterglow”, and “gold rush”!!

For fans of “Funny You Should Ask” by Elisa Sussman and the TV show “Saturday Night Live!”. This book is if if the Pete Davidson-Kim K relationship was gender swapped (average woman with superstar model looking man).

I gotta say, it took me about 25% to get into this, because I don’t really watch SNL (it’s not my type of humor), but once I did, I was HOOKED. I LOVE Noah. He is such a great charming and kind golden retriever man (WHO GOES TO THERAPY!) with Sally definitely being skeptical of love, self-sabotaging, and cautious (“Afterglow” is HER song). Curtis Sittenfeld took the concept of a y/n celebrity fan fiction and made it not only a mature (in vocabulary and writing style) and overall really enjoyable book, but it also made it very believable (which a lot of celebrity-and-normal-person romances don’t quite get).

I loved Sally’s character arc because I think she is so real relatable, but not in a cringy or frustrating way. There were so many moments where I felt so called out, because that was exactly how I feel. I think it navigated the topic of feeling insecure of being less conventionally attractive as well as the stress/insecurities of relationships in the public eye really well!

Overall, just a really enjoyable read, and I would definitely check out more books by this author in the future! I read this as an ebook arc and I will be purchasing a physical copy immediately.

Against all odds and the rules she wrote for her own skit (hot women can date normie slubs, but hot guys don't date normies), they seem to hit it off. Until Sally sabotages it. In part two, time and COVID protocols have turned them into pen pals and the connection is even more obvious. In part three, real life finds them and maybe they find their real selves.

With a gender-swapped Notting Hill trope, a bit of writer's life catnip, and a touch of A-list celebrity fan fiction feel, Romantic Comedy is perfect for fans of Nora Goes Off Script, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Emily Henry, and Olivia Dade.

This was so entertaining. The comedy sketch show setting both fascinated me and made me laugh out loud. The character dialogue was impeccably witty, and the characters themselves actually seemed like real people modeling a healthy relationship. I was skeptical of the level of COVID reference, but I *actually* (IYKYK) think the author handled the topic pretty well!!

I loved this book! I read it all in one day, and while honestly I've done that for books I ended up not really liking, this one was definitely one I enjoyed. I've really liked Curtis Sittenfeld's writing for a long time, and this is probably my favorite out of her books that I've read. She's so good at getting in people's heads and writing about complicated awkward interactions in such a compelling way, and the characters in this book are realistic and flawed but still likable. I love romance novels but I have problems with a lot of them, and this one found really great ways of getting around those problems. I would definitely recommend this book and I'm so glad I read it.
