A tale of despair, despondency and feeling lost. And this is a book which you don't want to read. It devastates you to the core. The book is so powerful, you just wish you didn't come across it. Such is the impact it leaves you.
3/4th way through the book where you feel everything is going to end well, it then hits you so hard on your face that it may take you days to recover from the effect that it leaves you. It made me cringe reading the final chapters of this book. It really made me cringe.
For me this book is a masterpiece and easily one of the best books to come out of India as far as English writing is considered. Make no mistake in giving it a miss but the irony is you just wish you haven't read it after all.

While completely competent, I felt like this had similar issues to reading Franzen; meaning the seams were showing too much. Dance puppets, dance! It is also, as a modern classic, in dialogue with other contemporary books about these same issues, and for me, at a prose level, this falls short. It’s accessible and crisp, but that’s about it.

It illustrates the dehumanization of the caste system at a pivotal time in its history, refusing to look away from atrocities that the government commits, but it’s also entirely prediction le as a plot because of this thesis. From the onset you know exactly what will become of most everybody, especially with heavy-handed foreshadowing.

The character work, overall, is great, though. But again, like Franzen, it all just feels a bit too orchestrated for me. I came to hear the music, not see the maestro.

this one was v depressing, there was a sense of detachment while describing the events which led them to have less initial impact until you went back and went wtf bro. i didn’t like at the end where every single character just so happened to be in the same spot but it was fast to read and enjoyable

At first I thought to myself that this book is not it for me, because it's all just accidents upon accidents upon accidents upon another accidents. The life of the characters seem so grim and ghastly. But then I started to notice all the events, the people, accidents, incidents, heartbreak intertwining all their lives together. And just.... wow. This book is one fine product of astonishing writing skills and mastery of language. This book deserves a spot in My Best Book of 2016 list.

Beautiful writing and story telling, but the story is hard to digest and not very hopeful.

I did not hesitate even for a second before declaring this one of the best books I have ever read. I was sobbing, quite pathetically, turning the last few pages. This sobbing wasn't the over dramatic sobs that leave me entranced, this is was a muffled one; the one that pricks your eyes before it falls of your cheek. The way India is shown, the state of emergency, the poverty, the infinite ordinary disasters of every day, it fills you up with a gratitude for your own safe being. I won't ever be the same as I was before I read the book.
