A tense and mysterious premise that made the book hard to put down. Rock music aesthetic in the book created a compelling connection to real world and the music we listened to growing up. But maybe the steamy bits sandwiched in the middle of the story, with each “encounter” slightly more convenient for the plot than the previous, did not keep me as engaged. Maybe that’s not for everyone, but that’s good to know too.

I hated the way they treated each other for the majority of the story.  It just wasn’t my type of story.  I’m sure plenty of people would be into it though.

I'm rather uncomfortable with the explicit s*x scene between two 18 year olds. I'm aware it happens. I, as a 30 year old, don't want to read or see it happening.

This book feels like something straight from Wattpad, written by some 15 year old girl who's never experienced anything vaguely romantic in her life. Not a single one of the characters is likeable (except for Manny, who honestly deserves so much better). Misha serves to remind me of why I am terrified of men. His theme song might as well be Norman fucking Rockwell by Lana Del Rey. And oh my god, I can not read another 'romance' where the characters just hate-fuck a couple times and decide they're in love without sharing even a single positive moment with each other. I can't do it. I'm going insane.

It's a shame, because I wanted to like this book. I'd heard mixed things, but from what I'd heard about the plot it sounded like something I would enjoy, or at least be interested in. I was not interested. I was either annoyed or outright bored for at least 75% of this book, and that's being generous.

I do want to give the dark romance genre another shot though, so if anyone has any recommendations that are not as god awful as this book, send them my way.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It really dug into the nitty-gritty aspects of high school, the need to fit in and the horrid expectations we set on each other and on ourselves. I liked that Ryen wasn’t some loveable, innocent female character that most books will proceed with as most people aren’t angels we perceive them to be. I also approved of the way Misha was written, his personality truly shown through the book words making it easy to picture the person he is. The same with Ryen and being able to see her in both her ‘façade’ and the true person she is.

I’ll admit it’s a little slow at the start, and some things said are a little vulgar but it does pull you in.

The absolute revelation at the end that we find out absolutely stunned me.

This book made me emotions go from curiosity, happiness, sadness to angry in many ways.. I connected with the words written on the page and that’s what I truly love when it comes to reading. If I can’t connect to the words written, then what’s the purpose?
