Really entertaining! A plot centered around two chefs in New Orleans makes for a unique story. Some slightly melodramatic twists that didn't always work. Looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

Meh....a little boring and slow reading.

Fun book The main thread of the story was just OK and a bit predictable, but what really shined was the clear love the author has for New Orleans and the food culture there. The bio says she is married to a chef, but she must have at least waited on tables or worked in kitchens somehow because there's stuff in here that I don't think someone could just research. The relationship between Ricky and G-man is nice and established, with just enough backstory you can get the sense of them.

Would definitely look into other books in the series.

Rickey and G-man, friends since childhood and a couple since their teens, have worked various New Orleans restaurant kitchens for a decade. Passionate, hot-headed Rickey gets a great idea for a new restaurant; G-man, the yang to Rickey's yin, would follow him anywhere. A celebrity chef named Lenny acts as their fairy godfather and decides to fund their venture, and a coked-up manager named Mike is their foil.

This was a funny, thoroughly enjoyable read. Brite (who has since transitioned and is now William Joseph Martin) is a talented writer best known for a handful of 90s horror novels. Liquor is nothing like those novels, but instead a culinary comedy-drama with fantastic characters and dripping with authentic atmosphere and enough menu descriptions to make a reader very hungry. Highly recommended.

The novel was alright, but the Spanish edition by El Tercer Nombre (2005) kind of ruined it for me. Quite badly translated, plus lots of typos...

This book was lovely, and I know that isn't a great adjective - in fact, myriad people would be loathe to hear their work described as "lovely" - but this book really was lovely. I say that because this book is the coziest piece of fiction by Poppy that I've ever read. A couple of books before this, I read Exquisite Corpse and nearly burnt the book after finishing it, such strong distaste for the subject matter I felt. So yeah, reading about Liquor, Rickey, and G-Man was a nice break from the dark, putrid tales Poppy usually weaves (and I usually enjoy).
