I was entirely too underwhelmed when all the threads finally converged and climaxed. Acceptance fell apart for me, and I kept believing that if I made it through the slog that this entry was, the wrap-up of the trilogy would be worth it. Alas.

If I ever revisit this trilogy, it would be to experience Annihilation again only. The unnerving atmosphere of that book was second to none, and was a feast to experience alongside the film.

I really wanted to like this book because I thought the first one was so interesting. I was hoping that this one would tie up loose ends and finally provide some answers, but I didn't feel like it did. The poetic language that I enjoyed in the first book became boring and pretentious in a book 2 or 3 times its length. I am convinced by this book that the most pretentious word that exists is "preternatural." The characters were cold and unrelatable, as they all fell into at least one of three categories: paranoid, manipulative, or all-knowing. Overall, a disappointing conclusion to some really unique and interesting ideas presented in the first book.

I appreciate the premise and idea behind this series- a fascinating look into the alien beauty and terror of a landscape untouched by human destruction - but, I felt quite a disconnect while reading it. It's hard to describe what exactly is off about this series, but I feel like the characters are rather flat and the story goes off in so many random, confusing directions that it lacks a strong emotional weight. I found it difficult to follow, maybe just me, but I felt like the writing was all over the place and the story was disconnected. Overall I found this book confusing and underwhelming. However, I can see that Vandermeer is a very talented writer with an interesting imagination, this book just wasn't my cup of tea.

A return to Area X and its mysteries is well deserved.  Seeing how  it began but without understanding why allows the reader to craft their own theories.
