This is such an important middle-grade novel. I would recommend this to middle grade and up. Even as an adult I enjoyed this story. It is a great and funny novel about such an important subject.

If this book was marketed as a YA novel, I would probably rate it 4 stars. But, it isn't. George is targeted toward middle grade (3-5) readers who are 8 to 11 years old. I have a 3rd grader (who just turned 9), and there is no way that I would let her read this. Why? Because it talks about dirty magazines and porn multiple times. I have no problem at all about her reading about a trans girl, but I do have a problem with her reading about sexuality in ways that are beyond her years. I should also add that Gino comes off very rudely in parts of the Q&A in the back of the book. While I found the Q&A informative and full of good information, I found their delivery rather frosty.

Such a sweet and wholesome book about a trans pre-teen finding her place in the world. Life-affirming! Every kid should read this book.

Thanks for making me weep on the bus..!
But seriously, this is such an important book!! For both kids and adults! Its written so wonderfully and tells the story about George, a girl trapped in a boys body! I love this story. I love the characters. Kelly esp. Everyone needs a Kelly in their life.
Just read it.

This was a good introduction to transgender issues for a young audience, but I did not find the writing compelling. For example, I can't think of a single acceptable reason for an author to narrate the details of an entire MarioKart series. Yes, I see that the brother is bonding with George via video games. No, I did not need to know who was Wario and who was Toad and exactly how many stars and banana peels each got.
As always, I'm biased because I'm often bored by middle-grade fic, but I've read much better lit focused on trans characters.

This is a very comprehensable childerns' book about a transgirl, Melissa, who still uses her given name George until she comes out. It is really good and well worth a read. Please give this book to your kids! Alex Gino is a genderqueer author and the audiobook is narrated by transgender narrator, Jamie Clayton. Representation is important, you know, and it's also important for us cis people to listen to trans voices. Thanks.
