The world building was my favorite part of this book. I loved the glimpses into all the various cultures. I was totally immersed in the book while reading, even though political intrigue isn't usually my thing.

Gonna give this three stars cause to be honest I hardly paid attention but when I did it was very clearly well-thought out!

This book is a saga within itself. I was engrossed from the first page by the unique style with which Carey weaves the story. The first 100 pages were the hardest to get through as the characters are building and changing and the passage of time is the fastest of the novel.

The plot twists were unpredictable at times and I had to keep reading to find out what happens. The hints are there but there is always one piece just out of grasp. I loved the intrigue and the way Carey pulled of Courtesans without it turning into a pure sex story. The sex adds to the plot and the testing of the characters and how far they will go.

The fact that this book released in the 90s has no issues honoring sex work and finding a way to make it a reverent act is amazing.

Over 100 pages in and I feel like I know nothing about the characters other than their jobs. I personally need characters with more personality, I cannot survive off of plot alone.
