Baroque in language, utterly beautiful, and it will reach every sense. This isn't spare writing. It wants to tell you the story of death. And life.

I don't know much about Italian history, and I still don't know anything really after reading this book. But I do have an idea of the social upheaval in the late 1800s and how the aristocracy felt about it. I suspect I would have enjoyed this book more if I had a better understanding of the history behind it.
