i liked this book better than the first one mainly bc of shep but i can’t say it was totally different from the first one. the same young semi closeted gay guy with history of abuse in his childhood and a much older big daddy-type gay man. i have a feeling about who the next book is going to be and i hope it will be different.

i loved shep. i missed reading about psychopaths and sociopaths.
“Shep blinked in surprise. “I’m not a psychopath.”
Calder scoffed. “Whatever you say, man.”
“I’m a high-functioning sociopath. There’s a difference.”

the heart was a nice touch. i missed unhinged characters.

Oh man, I enjoyed the hell out of this. I know I love Onley James' work, but then I don't read any for a while and am utterly floored all over again. Loved getting to really meet Shep (since he and Mac are mentioned/involved in the Necessary Evils series).

re-read: makes me want to read Mac and Archer's book soooooo bad.
