Loved this book and made me appreciate octopuses more. I would love a sequel and am happy I read this book.

This was really a great read. Very “high brow” sci-fi while pulling influence from other greats in the genre like Blade Runner and Arrival (but with octopuses!). Very thought-provoking and starts conversations around types of consciousness, language, culture, what it means to be a human, the future of AI and more. Only small knock on it is that it perhaps went on a bit long and one of the main characters served really no purpose. And if you’re looking for something plot-driven this isn’t it, but what’s here is gold.

Utterly original — and the philosophical stance about communication and shared meaning allowed this book to transcend all of the tired sf/f language tropes. I’m going to be thinking about this book for a long time.
