This was a lot of fun. The detective style "buddy cop" storyline was a nice change of pace from Sanderson's other books.
Content warnings for kidnapping, implied off-screen sexual violence, police, vigilantes, death of a loved one, PTSD, bombs/explosions, betrayal, poisoning, thievery, actions that would be self-harm or suicide without magical powers, and gun violence including protagonists killing accidentally.
Despite the long list of content warnings, this book is a largely a fun, light-hearted romp. Brandon's writing of female characters has improved significantly since the first Mistborn trilogy, even if there is one rather unfortunate issue with character motivation that he still needs to grow out of. The powers lead to fun, creative, and humorous scenes. The evolution of the world from the first trilogy is a delight.
I think the four star rating mostly comes down to my own mismatched expectations. The stakes are significantly lower than other Sanderson books I've read, and the pacing feels off partly because I was waiting for the reveal of higher stakes.
