This was my first book by Katie Henry and I almost didn’t read it. I was a little taken aback in the first few chapters by Alex and his controlling behaviors. I read a few reviews that listed him and his personality as a TW so I kept reading.
I thought the book would be a lighter read based on the stand up comedy plot. However, I found the story to be so much more than that. It was insightful and thoughtful and I’m so glad to have consumed it.
I loved her writing style and found the text to be almost lyrical in parts. The characters were well developed and felt real.

Picked this up from the new shelf at my library just to try something on the fly and it wasn't bad. I was intrigued with the stand-up storyline and wanted to see what the rest of the book had to offer. I found the Isabel struggled with quite a lot of stuff and thankfully found her voice and strength through stand-up and the friends she meets at the bar. I felt that the story dragged out some of the middle and could have brought some solutions earlier than it did to allow for more of the result/effect to play out. However, it was an entertaining read.
*NOTE* It is a YA novel that has references to and scenes about:
abuse (mental, emotional, and not quite physical but the illusion to getting there)
porn and masterbation (references, mostly in stand-up act but there are some at the very beginning)
drugs and drinking (though not heavily)
trauma from being propositioned and the abuse noted above

This is a coming of age that is about so much more than comedy. I loved this more than Katie Henry's 'Heretics Anonymous' (I didn't think that would be possible).
3.5-4/5
I finally finished a book! Not as funny as Katie Henry's other books... I hated the boyfriend so much, which is kind of the point, but I spent so much of the book thinking that our main character reeeeeallllly needed to break up with him. I liked the stand up element and how our main character grew as a person though! Interesting and well developed character dynamics.

I was given a free copy of the book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Izzy is surviving high school - she sits with her boyfriend's group at lunch, and has given up her best friend because she doesn't like her boyfriend. One day, she lies to her controlling boyfriend to avoid going on a date with him. When she happens to run into him and his group, she quickly ducks into a comedy club to avoid being seen by him - but ends up performing onstage. Once her set is over she meets a group of comedians that are in college. She lies to them and says she's in college to be able to continue hanging out with them. Throughout the story, Izzy is forced to recognize the status of her relationships and the cost of lying to everyone you care about. #netgalley #ThisWillBeFunnySomeday
Isabel is the quiet one in her family. Her parents are hardly ever around and her twin older siblings are newly off to college. But even when everyone is home, they don't listen to her anyway. Add to that, a controlling boyfriend who disapproves of her only friend and Isabel's life is pretty lonely. But one day when she accidentally stumbles into a comics open mic night, she ends up on stage. Before she knows it, she's performed and even made some new friends. But her friends don't know she's still in high school and her family and boyfriend know nothing about the new friends. Now what?
This new book from Katie Henry (Heretics Anonymous) brings the funny and the heart. It's also brings some tough topics, but done very well.
I'm not gonna lie. I almost gave up on this one after the first chapter. The gaslighting relationship is TOUGH and this comes from someone whose only been gaslit by the US president. But I kept going and it was worth it. But be aware of the content and avoid it if you need to.

This is a very well-written book, but I don't think it was right for me. I find that I'm struggling more with YA reads in general, especially when I don't feel like I have anything in common with the protagonist. Izzy has a controlling, emotionally abusive, gaslighting boyfriend. She also feels completely invisible at home. When she accidentally finds herself at a stand-up comedy open mic night and is befriended by a group of college students, she lets them think she's older than her sixteen years and embarks on a whole secret life of stand-up comedy. Henry does a really great job laying the groundwork and background for Izzy's choices and behaviors, and I think this will be a really great book for a lot of people. I personally just didn't connect to it. 3.5 stars, rounded up.
