I was worried going into this book that I wouldn’t find it funny, you know, high expectations. But, man did it make me laugh. In some ways I found myself relating to Isabel (not the comedy part, I’m not that witty) and that was sort of comforting to read. Lots of good points on issues that permeate our society today was brought up but not in the way that it sounded like it was progressive for the sake of being progressive. The diversity of the cast felt natural, like it existed and accepted as a fact, and we moved on. Overall, it was a hilarious, fun and “omg-i-can’t-put-this-down” read.

katie henry did it again!
i have read all of her books till date and they keep getting better.
this was the perfect version of teenager breaking out of their shell book.
plus there is some discussion of the stand up comedy industry (scene?), where there are very few spots and aceeptance of women, poeple of colour etc.
not only did i like the main character, the side characters sometimes outshined her.
the family dynamics felt real and authentic.
there is depiction of an abusive romantic relationship and that was handled well.
all in all perfect book.

Solid 3.5 stars! I love watching stand-up, so it was fun to have a book centered around it. I also really enjoyed the character development - certain parts had me cheering!
