One of Hemingway's grimmer works. I love me some Hemingway but this was depressing even for him. Yet, the characters are oddly compelling and the action does have you on the edge of your seat.
It started off as a four star but puttered out halfway through.

Brutal, tragic story of Harry Morgan, who tries to provide for his family through increasingly shady means, in Depression-era Florida Keys and Cuba. His story is contrasted against the Haves, including a Hemingway stand-in, and their superficial existence. Rough stuff.
An odd book. Split into three parts, but the third part was so much longer than the first two. And often veered off to tell us about the "haves," though we only got to know them well enough to dislike them. Which I suppose was the point, but that doesn't seem very fair, now does it?
I liked the Harry Morgan bits, though.
I have no opinion one way or t'other about the narrator. I don't think he affected my enjoyment of the book in either a positive or negative way.

Not a great book by any means: bitty, with scenes which seemed to have been written separately and stitched into a storyline which remains, frustratingly, underdeveloped. I'm glad that I know that Hemingway can be better than this.
It was a welcome change after just having read Joyce's Ulysses. I love the simplicity of Hemingway's writing, and the characterization in this book was captivating. I'm more familiar with Hemingway's short stories, but his novels kept the same pace and mystery that I love about In Our Time.
