"You know how it is there early in the morning in Havana with the bums still asleep against the walls of the buildings; before even the ice wagons come by with ice for the bars? Well, we came across the square from the dock to the Pearl of San Francisco Cafe to get coffee and there was only one beggar awake in the square and he was getting a drink out of the fountain. But when we got inside the cafe and sat down, there were the three of them waiting for us."
"I ain't no radical," he said. "I'm sore. I been sore a long time."
"A large white yacht was coming into the harbor and seven miles out on the horizon you cuold see a tanker, small and neat in profile against the blue sea, hugging the reef as she made to the westward to keep from wasting fuel against the stream"

Whatever cover people might try to lay down for it, the racism and sexism is really bad. It ruins what (very inconsistent) good writing there might be in the book.
A five and half hour quick listen, as we booked an anniversary weekend at Key West in six weeks.
This novel didn't resonate with me, although some genuine moments occur throughout. The narrative is disjointed, weirdly complicated and scattered with relationships between characters that are never fully explained. One of the weakest stories in the Hemingway oeuvre.
A strong start with interesting character development of the ‘main character’. Sadly, this soon meanders into secondary and tertiary characters for no discernible reason.
To be angry or not to be? This is a book that fails to live up to its full potential. I can deal with racist language if it's integral to the historical and cultural significance of the book. This isn't the case with To Have and Have Not. The plot could have easily taken place elsewhere and I can appreciate the xenophobic and socially "tough" environment without reading the n-word 135 times (as counted by one reviewer). I can deal with violence if it shows me the vulnerability of characters. This isn't the case with Harry Morgan. He's an amoralist who doesn't care one iota about the consequences of his actions and what he does isn't violence but banality (of evil). Any mediocre attempts to humanise him -- e.g., illegally smuggling in the name of supporting a one-dimensional family -- become painfully shallow and are a far cry from our sympathy. I can deal with experimentation if it has the courage to blend genres as if they're mere empty categories. This isn't the case with Hemingway's writing. The stories are barely hanging (together) and are meaninglessly meandering such that he fails to even deliver one of his key messages: life goes on whether we like it or not, during our life and after our death.

This isn't the best of Hemingway, but it's certainly better than what others have written about it. The first thing to note, something I knew going in, is that the book is completely different than the movie. With that said, it's fascinating to see how the book was adapted to the screen.
In typical fashion, Hemingway's hero, Harry Morgan, follows the model of his other protagonists - manly, tough, but with a soft heart and a noble spirit. Similar to Islands in the Stream, though not as distinct, it's written in three separate parts: Harry, the avenging angel; Harry, the doomed entrepreneur; Harry, the self-destructive desperado.
Well-written in Hemingway's iconic style, the action flows freely, the dialog is as real as it gets and in the end, you really get the sense of where Papa's head was at when he wrote this piece.
