Ernest Hemingway

nare mensen, depressieve setting, vage dialoog, en bijzonder gul met uhmm negatieve omschrijvingen van personen met een andere huidskleur :/

To Hemingway the world is divided into two classes: the haves and the have-nots. Harry Morgan goes from an honest hard-working man (it's Hemingway after all), to a man struggling to make ends meet and willing to do anything, including illegal smuggling, to make sure he can provide for his family. It's the classic dilemma of stealing bread to fight starvation. Not his best work, but still a memorable story of man's will in the face of dire circumstances, and shaped by that memorable sharp, brash dialogue Hemingway is known for (showcased when he describes the specificity of fishing). The love story is a little hollow, and the subplot of a couple minor characters actually have a more interesting love affair, making the novel a little unbalanced. Still, adding the prominent Marxist views of the era with the clear representations of the underground Key West and Cuba make it a worthwhile read.

definitely not his best work. i wish it had just stayed the story of harry morgan, i didn’t care for the other characters and dont understand why the got as much say in the book, also the portrayal of the women in this was definitely something

One of the lesser works of the master. There's limited coherence in this novel: a collection of loose stories, excellent in themselves, with protagonist Harry as a binding character. Also the underlying themes are variegated: the little man's fight against injustice and social misery, the contrast with the opulent life of the rich; the harshness of life, etc. Hemingway clearly experimented with the form, with sometimes beautiful effects, but - as said - there's no real unity in the book.

i would like to imagine that Hemingway kept two different rough drafts for Old Man and the Sea and The Sun Also Rises / and thus the amalgamation of both created To Have and Have Not

It’s surprisingly bad.
