This (I've discovered upon finishing it) is said to be Hemingway's worst novel. I enjoyed it, although I'd give it three and a half stars if I could. I'm still trying to work one or two things out, but I found it to be very readable and evocative.

well that was unexpectedly violent and odd! I'm sure for the time this was published, it would have been quite scandalous!
Basically a story of a charter fisherman struggling to provide for his family in Key West, FL. There is a trip to Cuba, a disaster of a liquor smuggling trip and some human smuggling that also doesn't go well.
The ending had some weird chapters/paragraphs of women's thoughts that were extremely and annoyingly repetitive.
Was just not what I expected from this author, but also nice to see he's not staying in a box!

Wonderful little book of Harry Morgan's misadventures.
Probably not the best book to enter into reading Hemingway. Parts were enjoyable and I thought the protagonist was interesting. Yet, parts seemed out of place. Why are we interested to a random protagonist 3/4 way through the story? What did that add (because I don't know)?
There is also a lot of racist language. I get a work of art is a product of it's time but that doesn't mean it is justified. This made it a tough read and gave me a negative impression of Hemingway. Was it just the view of the protagonist or the author themselves? I suppose that is a difficult question with an impossible answer, especially after reading just one of his works. Hopefully Fiesta is better.

Not Hemingway’s strongest but as a portrait of Key West boy howdy is it on the nose.
