pretty mid but i did get invested in the story enough to finish. so much racism and misogyny though
adventurous dark medium-paced

Re-read. One of the weaker Hemingway novels. Despite some flourishes and passages of exquisite writing, overall the short book feels disjointed, with the plot and viewpoint jumping around. And central character Harry Morgan, while having some of the characteristics of a Hemingway hero, is undoubtedly racist, even measured against the standards of the time, and a particularly unpleasant anti-hero.

As allways I enjoyed Hemingway’s writing. This is a very recognizable and typical Hemingway in some ways. At the same time, it is a book to read a few times: the story is not very coherent, there is a lot of shifting of POV, and the tone of the story is very different in the first part vs the second part.
Also, I think Hemingway is a real male chauvenist:-) But I can forgive him, if I see him as a child of his time. But I’m allways prepared when reading his books for the typical tough guy stuff.

Don’t read this book if you only like the traditional style books with happily ever afters. Re1d this if you feel connected to existantialism, doubts, melancholy and despair or at least are prepared to read about it.

This is another Hemingway book that I listened to. I've decided these aren't the kind of books I'd enjoy reading, but really do like listening to. This one in particular was read by Will Patton, who was a great narrator.

I liked parts of this book a lot, others...not so much. I was disappointed that there were several characters introduced at the very end, who I didn't think added a lot of value to the story. I would have liked to know more about Harry and his wife and family...instead of having to be introduced to all these other new folks.

Not my favorite Hemingway so far, but it was good. And the narration added a lot to my enjoyment of this particular book.
