Hard to give this book any higher given just how appallingly racist some of the descriptions of the characters are. The first half of the book is good, the second half seems to lose focus of the plot and almost becomes a short story compilation at points as Hemingway describes the lives of some insignificant side characters. Hemingway finds an extremely interesting setting in pre-revolution Cuba but manages to completely butcher it by painting Cuba and its residents as nothing more than a medley of crime.
The book, especially the second half, would have definitely benefitted from fleshing out the revolutionary characters rather than simply reducing them to one-dimensional caricatures. There was clearly a point Hemingway wanted to make about communism and violent revolutions but it gets mixed up in all the typical masculinity of his writing that it's honestly hard to pinpoint what it is he wants to say.
As with most things, more communism and less self-insert masculinity would have made the book better.

arrgh i love his writing style but it was so racist near the beginning and that truly threw me off sooo much like slurs chucked all over the place. unfortunate because i've loved other hemingway and considered myself a hemingway fan but i have to say this book was not a hemingslay. i also bought because i saw it was set in cuba and miami but he wasn't nice at all about the cuban people and made it out to be only a violent, crime-ridden place- not nice from hemingway.
Last 30 pages were interesting, but that wasn't nearly enough to make up for the 200 torturous pages I had to get through first. Stylistically interesting, but the content isn't worth the paper it's written on. Surprise, Harry Morgan dies and it's what he deserves. Fuck. This. Book.

Для меня книга раскрылась только в конце. Такие разные люди, в таких разных мирах и все по-своему несчастны. А те кто счастлив, танцуют на костях. Как та семья продающая напитки: «Самоубийствам нет места там, где деньги делаются таким путем…»
И то как человек только под конец жизни понимает самые банальные вещи. Гарри Морган самоуверенный, глупый и странный человек. «Потребовалось немало времени, чтобы все это высказать, – и целая жизнь, чтобы это понять.»
Ещё часть про ветеранов. То, что делает война с людьми. Война — это школа сатаны. Она забирает у людей все, издевается над ними, превращает в примитивных созданий и ничего не даёт взамен. «Нечего терять. Мы одичали. Хуже тех, с кем начинал Спартак. А сделать что-нибудь трудно, потому что нас так долго били, что единственное утешение – это выпивка, а единственный источник гордости – способность терпеть. Но не все из нас такие. Найдутся и те, кто врежет в ответ.»

When in Key West it only feels fitting to spend some time reading Hemingway.
Definitely not his best work I still enjoyed the vignettes of the people living in Key West which were poignant and colored. The biggest downside was that you could easily tell, that these were three different stories.
Overall, this was middle of the road for me but I enjoyed reading it.
