As a person with chronic illness, this book was pretty profound and normalizing for me as she talks about the intricacies of living through illness and the impact of, and on, human relationships (including the one with herself). In particular, her discussions around the emotional experiences after remission (particularly chapter 26 and 30) made me feel so seen. I wish I had had this book in the early 2000s as it would have been nice to know I wasn’t alone in my experience-I think it would have made me more kind on myself as I navigated the war my body was waging on itself.
I listened to the audiobook, which she read. I would really recommend this book for anyone experiencing chronic physical illness…cancer, auto immune, illnesses that can shift the paradigm of “time”. I also think it could be insightful for those we love (who love us) to read. I am sure I will read it again. And also, watch American Symphony—-that is how I discovered the book.

I found the second half of the book to be filled with insights about life and grief & I took lots of notes. The writing is raw and filled with emotion.
WHAT. A. BOOK. Wow — I could not put this down. Suleika Jaouad graduates from college, moves to Paris, falls in love, and quickly discovers she has leukemia. In this memoir (which she narrates herself for the audiobook) she takes readers through her illness experience, years and years of it, and how it affected her, her family, her love life and her work. When she finally transitions back into “real life” she needs time on her own to discover who she is. She takes a road trip and meets up with people all over the country who wrote to her while she was in the hospital. Incredible story, incredibly written, by an incredible woman.

Author does a good job of taking the reader through her illness and recovery. She spend many years very sick. The road trip portion of the book is near the end and I think could/should have been more of the focus.
