This is my first read of Kuang's work, chosen to fulfill my A-Z challenge. This book brought out so many emotions, but the key emotion I felt was anger. The audacity of June to want to play the victim throughout this entire story had me wanting to throw something. I don't consider myself a violent person, but as a woman of color,  this book had me wanting to choose violence. To me, this is a sign of great writing and storytelling because I felt like I needed to discuss what was going on with others. I felt like this particular incident was really happening in the world, and I was bearing witness. As the reader finds out, Athena wasn't as perfect as she seemed, but I still found myself needing June's lies to be discovered.  Whew, I feel like I need to read something relaxing next, because the theme of this book just had me on edge. I look forward to reading more of Kuang's work.

This was such a good book but it made me so uncomfortable. Which is clearly the point. But woof, I swear this book gave me heartburn. June is a completely unreliable narrator but also, there are no heroes in this book. I found myself thinking about it even when I wasn’t reading it. It’s a tough read, but I definitely recommend.

Pretty good - easy read and definitely some interesting commentary about appropriation and problematic behavior from liberal white women/authors. The main character is really unlikeable but I think that's kind of the whole point. I definitely enjoyed the book overall.
