A disgraced captain is given command of a watchtower in the corner of a realm to be forgotten. Through a series of events the guard discover an ornate tomb below the keep, as well as powerful wards designed to keep something in.

I feel this would have been a lot better as a full novel with a more fleshed out story. The recurring theme of deeds done in the past is an excellent one that drives interest in the characters but there is only so much you can do with 133 pages.

It suffers from more than a few cliches towards the end but this part whodunit part monster horror novella is worth the read.

A terrific little story that really surprised me. I was expecting a company of free guild soldiers fight standard Chaos worshipers or maybe some Skaven... somehow. What I got was a very tense story about a small cast of characters solving a mystery, confined in a small area. It's dark, gritty, and shows an interesting look at what it would be like to live in such a horrific place.
Dicken also made brilliant use of the absurdness of the mortal realms. This story takes place in Chamon, the realm of metal. What this usually means is that there will be a lot of shiny gems or ores on the ground, maybe even a flow of molten silver; they serve as a nice backdrop but that's about it, usually. Here it's woven into the story, the reason our characters are confined is because of a massive storm of metal shards that would shred a normal person to pieces within seconds.
I would leave off with something I thought was a bit less interesting, but I honestly couldn't tell you; one of the perks of being a novella is that you've a lot less room to screw up in.
5 full stars, loved it
